Cinco de Mayo

a cup of coffee on a table

Sunday, May 5th, 2024

10 am - 9 pm

Cinco de Mayo, or May 5th, is a holiday that celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. In 1861, Benito Juárez was elected president of Mexico during a time of financial ruin and was forced to default on debt payments to European governments. Britain and Spain were able to negotiate with Mexico, however, that same year, 6,000 French troops set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles against 2,000 Mexican soldiers. To everyone’s surprise, the French retreated with 500 loses, while fewer than 100 Mexican soldiers had been killed. Although not a major strategic win in the overall French war, Mexico’s success at the Battle of Puebla represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and exemplified a true underdog story with great perseverance, skill and determination.
